Whether you're working up in the North Slope, in Anchorage, or even in your home office, work is stressful. Deadlines, meetings, and constant notifications can leave anyone feeling overwhelmed. But there's one simple way to beat this stress: mindfulness. Mindfulness is about being present in the moment, aware of your thoughts and feelings but not judgmental about them. Here are five simple mindfulness tips for beating stress at work.

1. Start Your Day with Mindfulness

The first several minutes of your day can set the tone for everything that follows. When you wake, spend a few moments just noticing your breath. Sit or lie down comfortably, take a few deep, slow breaths, and then exhale fully. This simple practice can clear and calm the mind, and reduce the "hit" of stress hormones one gets when thinking about the day ahead.

2. Frequently Take Breaks

It is important to step away from work periodically to recharge. Studies show the most productive people work for about 52 minutes and then take a 17-minute break. During your break, do something that is both relaxing and mindful. This can be a walk, a little stretching, or even closing your eyes and taking a few deep breaths.
